Audit, improvement, reliability and debottlenecking of the wastewater treatment plant

Location : Fos-sur-Mer (13)
Project phases: Feasibility studies
Study period: 2 months

Evere, a subsidiary of the Spanish group Urbaser, is a multifunctional treatment centre for household waste by sorting, organic recovery and energy recovery. Organic recovery is done by methanisation in digesters. The liquid fraction of the material leaving the digesters is sent to the treatment plant

Project context: The treatment plant is at the limit of capacity and performance. It must be debottlenecked to cope with the future increase in the volume of waste to be treated

Emdelen Mission:

  • Installation audit
    • Analysis of the current operation (flow rate, pH, COD, MeS, nitrogen, O2, Fe content)
    • Loads applied already close to design values
    • Average nitrogen concentration too high
    • TSS content too high for aerobic treatment
    • Carbon deficit
    • Excessive iron content for ultra-filtration membranes
    • Anaerobic buffer tank
    • Limiting anoxic basin volume for the average nitrogen flow
    • Sludge age too old
  • Based on the conclusions of the audit (confirmed by our laboratory tests), proposals to Evere for the following modifications:
    • Implementation of a redox control in the buffer tank
    • Control of the hydro-ejector of the buffer basin with redox
    • Installation of an aeration of the anoxic basin controlled by a redox probe
    • Separation of biomass (to protect the membranes from ultra filtration) by the installation of a clarifier and tanks for re-aeration, degassing and flocculation upstream
    • Recycling of clarifying sludge to anoxic basin
    • Finishing treatment of the hard COD on activated carbon filter
  • Realization of PIDs, 3D model, functional analysis, equipment specifications, layout plans and civil engineering guide plans of the clarifier
  • Recommendations on operating parameters (redox, oxygen in aeration, methanol dosage, sludge recycling rate, pH)
  • CAPEX, OPEX and planning

Total amount of the project :

Range A < €10 million
Range B: between €10 and €20 million
Range C: between €20 and €50 million
Range D > €50 million

Implementation of smoke treatment for all existing furnaces

CARBONE SAVOIE in Vénissieux bakes cathodes for its smelters. Cooking releases polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that were not captured by the electrostatic precipitators initially present at the exit of each furnace before the chimneys.  The project consisted of the installation of a Thermal Oxidation Reactor (TRO) and a new chimney, as well as the flue gas supply ducts to the reactor from each furnace outlet.

Location: Vénissieux, Rhône, FRANCE
Project phase : Studies and implementation
Project duration : 18 months

Studies:

Following an unsuccessful call for tenders, EMDELEN was called to reduce risk to the project planning. The first task was therefore to find ways of optimising and relaunching the call for tenders. In parallel, calls for tenders for the other lots (boilermaking, electricity, fire protection) were prepared and launched. EMDELEN then carried out the supervision of the works in order to implement the construction and respect the client’s commitments towards the OTR supplier, and ensure commissioning on the deadline set by the State’s administrative authorities.

Features:

  • Construction of foundations in congested areas of underground networks (adoption of special foundation provisions)
  • Construction of underground flumes with temporary support by micropiles of the existing building and underpinning for connection to smoke flumes
  • Production of custom-made boiler parts for connection of new flue gas ducts without factory shutdown
  • Smoke ducts with refractory lining inside
  • 3 OTR reactors of 80 tons each – installed using a 500-ton variable-flying crane

Total amount of the project:

Slice A <10 M €
Tranche B: between 10 and 20 M €
Tranche C: between 20 and 50 M €
Slice D> 50 M €

Redesign of effluent treatment

Location: Saint-Auban (04)
Project phases: Feasibility studies
Study period: 6 months

Context of the project: Arkema has a biological station and a physico-chemical station in Saint-Auban. The biological plant treats Arkema’s industrial effluents and effluents from the city of Saint-Auban. The city will stop sending its effluents, making the biological station oversized and inadequate. The project therefore consists in migrating the treatment from the biological station to the physico-chemical station, which is obsolete and has been shut down for several years. The effluents discharged must comply with the new Ministerial Order and the BREFs

Studies :

  • Study and definition of the segregation of effluent flows:
    • Acidic flows without TSS or COD that only require pH adjustment
    • Flows loaded in TSS and/or COD
    • Fluxes loaded with adsorbable organic halogen and aromatic organochlorine
    • Neutral flow without any need for treatment
  • Pilot laboratory tests
    • Neutralization
    • Physico-chemical treatment
    • Adsorption on activated carbon
    • Ozone oxidation
  • Based on the results of laboratory tests:
    • Definition of the physico-chemical treatment process
    • Definition of the size of the structures
    • Audit of the existing station
    • Validation of existing recoverable equipment
    • Creation of new works
    • Definition of activated carbon filters
  • Implementation of PIDs, functional analysis, implementation plans
  • CAPEX, OPEX and planning

Total amount of the project :

Range A < €10 million
Range B: between €10 and €20 million

Treatment of effluents from the alumina production plant before discharge into the sea

Location: Gardanne (13)
Project phases: Studies, implementation and commissioning
Project duration: 24 months (1st step) + 18 months (2nd step)

Project background: The discharge of “red sludge” at sea began to be treated by filtration and then supplemented by physico-chemical treatment. EMDELEN has been entrusted with the two successive missions of implementing filtration and treatment units:

  • Addition in 2015 of a third filter press to the two previously installed by ALTEO for a total capacity of 42.5 t/h of sludge, as well as a pocket filter for the temporary treatment of effluents before discharge into the sea; This project has made it possible to reduce pollution in suspended solids at discharge by around 97%.
  • Construction in 2018-2019 of a complete treatment plant with CO2 neutralisation, physico-chemical flocculation and decantation for 320 m3/h to improve the quality of the discharge and comply with the water law (French standards) and European directives. The treatment process was defined and refined following pilot tests conducted by ALTEO between the two stages of implementation.

Studies :

  • Assessment, sizing of equipment and drafting of technical specifications
  • Implementation of the two new installations
  • Specification of the work (Civil Engineering, steel structures, piping, EIA, and equipment)
  • Consulting, technical alignment and supplier selection with ALTEO
